The things I care about are usually overlooked.
There’s a high chance that if you stumbled on my page, it’s because you’re curious about my writing, my academic background, and other miscellaneous projects. Anyone who knows me can affirm how dedicated I am to fight for social awareness for immigrants, creatives from minority groups, international students far from their homes, and BIPOC media professionals.
I graduated in the worst year possible for an international student in the USA: 2020. In some way, I kept pushing through the many experiences I got to do both in fashion and journalism while promoting my book. Then one day something in me switched: I created my own editorial space, a space that really wouldn’t discriminate against people’s nationalities, backgrounds, races, and so on. ‘Cause I knew that damn… I couldn’t be the only one feeling left out of the industry. I knew how worthy and intelligent I am, and my potential couldn’t be suppressed by my bureaucratic limitations, my race, my gender, and other factors that do not favor mainstream media.
Two years later, I found myself on an entrepreneurial journey in fashion journalism, by forging a vibrant editorial hub that counts more than a hundred articles. Maintaining an excellent GPA in grad school, working part-time in academia, and directing a magazine aren’t things I thought I could be ever capable of doing when I was at my lowest points in 2020.
Because of my experience and background, I am sensitive to certain topics and willing to extend help within my capabilities. My closest friends, my partner, and my family know that. There are many ways you can support my work if you want to help me fuel the resources I built to dismantle the lack of opportunities for people who look like me and share experiences like mine.
If you feel inclined to support a Black non-American journalist, writer, and academic researcher, check the menu on your right (for those reading from a laptop) or here below (if you’re on your smartphone/tablet).

If you identify as a womxn and are part of the BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ community, I’d love to get in touch with you. I’m currently studying for the NASM CPT certificate and my dream is to incorporate fitness into a series of experiences at FOTB (targeted exercises for media professionals). Not enough international students or BIPOC/LGBTQ+ folks get to access to affordable and healthy fitness options. Time to re-write this narrative. Let’s chat via email: giulia.ota@gmail.com
